|WOLVERINE aka James Howlett|
Code Name: Wolverine
Real Name: James Howlett, Jr. (unknown)
Nickname: Logan / Patch
Canon: Yes (adaptation)
Weight: 145lb / 264lb (post-adamantium)
Eye Color: blue
Hair Color: black
Marks of Significance: Before the solar flare he was missing his right leg and his left eye. These were regrown when his healing factor kicked in. He is notably hirsute, has three extending claws in each hand, his incisors are slightly more elongated than a normal human's (a sign of his feral mutation). Logan looks at least a decade younger than he is, also due to his healing factor.
Clothing Styles/Colors: Casual, jeans, flannel, leather jackets, work clothes. He'll wear whatever color's on the shelf, so long as it isn't loud or obnoxious. He sports the lumberjack/ex-military look.
Other: Unless he's in a uniform of some sort, he's usually wearing his leather jacket. Has been known to wear cowboy hats and boots on occasion. His favorite accessory is a lit cigar hanging from his lip.
Ain't found a way to kill me yet
Eyes burn with stinging sweat
Seems every path leads me to nowhere
Wife and kids household pet
Army green was no safe bet
The bullets scream to me from somewhere
Here they come to snuff the rooster,
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die, no, no, no
Ya know he ain't gonna die
Logan could be the poster child for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. His memories of his past are all fragmented and corrupted by systematic and consistent mental/memory tampering. This is a man who does not know his real name, where he came from, or when he was born. He remembers bits and pieces of his life because of his powerful sense memory, which he owes to the feral aspect of his mutation. Logan is a violent man by nature. However, buried deep inside all those layers of hurt and anger there is a man who tries to do the right thing, and has a built-in policy against hurting the innocent; namely the very young. He doesn't really feel any adult is truly innocent. There is a deep self-loathing in Logan, because of his violent nature. A part of him considers himself and animal, while another part fiercely tries to hold on to his humanity.
When we first meet Logan, this has resulted in a man who acts like a sociopath, who has no compunction or moral objection to killing, so long as his kill isn't an innocent. On the other hand, he's also the kind of man who will stop a mugging, or stop the strong from preying on the weak in his private time. He reacts especially violently when coming to the defense of women and children.
He's a hard man, and has a lot of macho knee-jerk reactions ingrained into him by his harsh life. He may not remember the deeds, but certain reactions are hardwired into his brain, like muscle memory. He has been known to travel around earning money as a brawler in underground, illegal fight arenas and the like. He's afraid, however that if he gives in to the instinct to kill, it will only bring him closer to fully becoming the animal.
He thinks he is insane, because he could swear when he looks in the mirror that he remembers missing and eye and a leg, but his body is perfectly whole now. He is also focused, tenacious, a survivor. Logan is prone to berserker rages, on top of being hostile, anti-social, and having lone wolf mentality (which gets in the way of teamwork). He presents an old-school mercenary attitude, and can be stubborn, inflexible, and disrespectful. This all colors his personality, accentuating the hard edges of it until he can come across as cocky, abrasive, or downright belligerent. But Logan has a great capacity for compassion that he hides because his experience has taught him to hide anything that might be construed as soft, or weak. However, he will often show great tenderness and kindness to his lovers and comrades-in-arms once they get past his defenses.
An accelerated healing factor that regenerates any and all damaged or destroyed organs and tissue is possibly Logan's most stunning and powerful mutational ability. This healing factor also dramatically slows his aging process. He looks younger now than before the solar flare, around 28 years old at 40, and shows no signs that he's aging at all right now. Bone claws that extend from beneath his skin, three on each hand; like naturally occurring Tekko-kagi or Japanese hand claws. These will be considerably more useful and deadly when they are eventually adamantium-laced. Enhanced feral senses round out his mutant abilities, making him an indefatigable tracker once he has someone's scent, not to mention allowing him great stealth.
Other Abilities: Logan was always the shortest kid in class, so he studied martial arts from a very young age. Bruce Lee was his idol, because he was small and defeated all his adversaries, and so he wanted to emulate him. He was lucky enough there was a Koryū, traditional Japanese martial arts school, near his home. He may not remember, but his body does. Logan worked in construction and demolition, so he is handy around all manner of commercial type explosives and heavy machinery. He knows his way around guns from living in the Canadian wilderness, and then being a soldier in two wars; then the Perfect Soldier Program implanted more sophisticated weaponry expertise into his brain, along with further killing techniques and even some above adequate computer skills. He doesn't always have access to this information, however, because the process was not completed.
Logan was born James, Jr. to James and Elizabeth Howlett on March 25, 1973. His father was a logger, like his father before him. Logan never knew anything but hard work in his life.
He was born smallish, like his mother's side of the family, and his own dad called him a runt. He had to earn every ounce of respect he ever got, and there was precious little of that. Because of his size disadvantage, he learned to idolize Bruce Lee movies early on, and later enrolled in a local Koryū, a traditional Japanese martial arts school led by a Master who had left Japan for political reasons and ended holed up in Canada. When his father died in a work related incident, Logan chose to drop out of school and go to work at 16 to support his family. His mother died of grief less than a year later, and Logan was on his own.
Disenchanted and angry at the world, he enlisted in the military, beginning a cycle from which he could not seem to escape. He went on no less than seven tours of duty in at least four different wars throughout his adult years. In between soldiering, he worked on and off in the logging industry, in construction and demolition, and several other odd jobs to support himself. His Achilles' heel was his volatile, violent temper.
Throughout this time, he also took to brawling for money, earning the moniker of Wolverine. The skunk bear, aka wolverine, is a stocky and muscular carnivore that has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the documented ability to kill prey many times its size.
There was a short period of peace in his life. When he returned from Iraq, strangely yearning for home, he met and fell in love with a Native Canadian Blackfoot woman, Kayla Silverfox. It was the happiest four years of his life, in which he tried to find his center again, putting in practice the disciplines he had learned at the dojo all those years before. It all ended tragically when Logan came home one day to find Kayla brutally murdered. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and held for suspicion of murder, but his alibi held and he was finally released, only for him to crawl into a whiskey bottle for a few months. He was thirty-four years old at the time.
Logan became a drifter. He could be found roaming the northern United States and Canada, doing odd jobs and the occasional lumberjack gig, but mostly brawling for cash in underground, illegal fight arenas. He lost his left eye in a dirty fight, beginning a vicious cycle of violence between him and a man he only knew as Creed. Logan resumed his life of brawling the moment he got out of the hospital. If anything, he was fiercer than ever, and earned the nickname Patch for the black patch he wore over his missing left eye.
His last tour of duty was Kandahar in 2009. Deemed reckless, and damn near suicidal, he was promptly shipped back for being too unstable. He came back only to find more violence. Another almost lethal encounter with Victor Creed ended up with Creed crushing his right leg against a concrete wall with a hotwired car. By the time Logan was rushed to a hospital, the leg had to be amputated above the knee.
Logan ended up in Toronto in the years leading up to Black Friday, getting by on a modest soldier's pension and some disability money, which he mostly spent on booze. At thirty-eight years old, his life was over.
Around mid-2012, Logan started getting sick a lot. It was as if his immune system was quitting on him too, and leaving for greener pastures. His alcohol consumption alone could not explain his developing a whole battery of what seemed to be severe environmental allergies, including an unspecific condition akin to a walking pneumonia. For a country boy who'd never been sick a day in his life, it was a mighty strange time.
He was constantly sick for the six weeks prior to December 21, 2012. He spent most of those three days before the flare delirious with a devilishly high fever that would not break. Then, right as the flare blacked out most of civilization, Logan's body was wracked by unimaginable agony. His mutation kicked in, activating his accelerated healing factor. His howls of pain were heard all over the clinic as his missing leg and eye miraculously regenerated within hours. Not only that, but he developed abnormal bony growth, thought to be bone spurs, between his knuckles. He ended up with a matching set of three roughly foot-long claws in each hand.
James Howlett, Jr. was collected by Department H, a branch of the Canadian military which he had served for so many years. They had ties to what would become the infamous Perfect Soldier Program. James was less than willing to be experimented on, and he seemed to be growing more feral and animalistic with each passing day, so the program decided to wipe his memories and brainwash him into obedience before the seemingly unkillable soldier could become a problem. But the process did not account for James' healing factor.
His mind was a mess of incomplete snippets of memory of his past life. Confused, and almost completely feral at this point, he literally clawed his way out of the facility in a fit of berserker rage. He came to with a bloody set of dog tags all tangled up in his claws. His fuzzy memories included many scenes of battle, so he logically concluded they belonged to him. They read LOGAN, and the first four digits of a half-melted down serial number.
Thinking of himself as Logan, he survived in the wild, more animal than man, for several months. Eventually, enough of his humanity pieced itself together for him to understand he was one of those mutants everyone was going on about in the news and everywhere he went. Nobody took much notice of the short, hairy man. Those that did generally regretted it.
By the time he was conscious of himself again and not an animal, he'd put too many miles between himself and the Perfect Soldier facility, and the snows and rains had faded the trail down to nothing. Having nowhere else to go, and being naturally inclined to track and hunt, he followed the trail of mutants drifting towards the Haven. He waited until he was sure the place wasn't a trap before making his presence known to Xavier and Magneto.
More recently, he made a place for himself at the Haven, finding both a home in the X-men and a woman who loved him, warts and all. He was later recaptured by the Perfect Soldier Program and, secretly led by Sinister, had nearly indestructible Adamantium bonded into his whole skeleton. His bone claws were filed to razor sharpness before the bonding process, leaving him with six metal claws instead of his old rougher bone ones.
He was reprogrammed as a killer, and came back to the Haven in a rampage after escaping his captors, almost killing Xavier in the process. Cured of his brainwashing, he returned to active service in the X-men as well as being tapped by Warpath for his secret black ops and wetworks mutant team. He also returned to the arms of his woman, only to have her be brutally murdered by Sabretooth.
Having his old foe targeting people he loved made Logan hunt down the son he hadn't known he had until very recently and bring him back to the Haven for his safety. While their bond is powerful, they can rarely seem to see eye to eye except when it comes to meat, beer and bar brawls.
But more surprises await. Unbeknownst to Logan, a certain donation he had made for cash years ago resulted in a girl, Laura, who inherited bone claws like her daddy's when the Solar Flare hit.
